New Player Director Elected as Josh Hodgson Departs Board

Shaun Lane Elected to RLPA Board

The Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) is pleased to welcome Shaun Lane to the Board following his election as Director at the RLPA Annual General Meeting on Monday, 31 March 2025.

Shaun has been a passionate and dedicated advocate for players, serving as a member of the Men’s Player Advisory Group since 2023.

“I am very proud and honoured to be elected as a Director on the RLPA Board,” said Shaun Lane.

“The RLPA has relentlessly taken on the hard stuff to get the best outcomes for players, and for me to play an even greater role in doing that is a rewarding moment for me.

“The collective strength of players is what makes the RLPA so strong, and I am excited to start working with all the Directors to harness that strength to achieve the RLPA’s mission and strategic objectives.”

Josh Hodgson Departs RLPA Board

Following the expiration of his term, Josh Hodgson vacated his role as Director at the AGM. Josh was first elected as Director at the 2022 AGM and played a prominent role in the negotiation of the current collective bargaining agreement.

“I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved during my time on the RLPA Board as a Player Director,” says Josh Hodgson.

“Coming from England, I know first-hand what it’s like to play in a league without a strong players’ association – without strong representation that is not able to advance our interests or ensure our voices are heard and respected.

“Looking back, I take great pride in what we’ve accomplished —navigating the challenges of COVID, securing the game’s future through the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, and achieving the first-ever Women’s CBA.

“I wish all the players the very best for the future and look forward to staying involved with the RLPA through their Past Player and Transition Program.”

Clint Newton also thank Josh for his substantial contributions to the collective in his time as a Director.

“While serving as a Director, Josh experienced a drastic change to his life with a sudden retirement from rugby league,” said Clint Newton.

“Since then, he has remained an invaluable voice on the Board. The RLPA sincerely thanks Josh for his contributions as a player, leader, and Director.

“On behalf of the RLPA Board, I would also like to congratulate Shaun for being elected to the RLPA Board.”

RLPA Reports Strong Progress

The RLPA reported a successful year of strong progress and key victories for its members while enhancing its leadership and strategic direction.

Key highlights for the year included:

  •  The delivery of the RLPA’s most comprehensive strategic plan to date driving efficiency, engagement, and long-term impact.
  • The establishment of the Mana Group, ensuring stronger advocacy for Pasifika and Māori players.
  • Improved scheduling for the NRLW competition, along with an enhanced structure and payment system for the NRLW State of Origin, securing greater stability and recognition for the game’s elite female players.
  • The RLPA Past Player and Transition program has had an immediate and lasting impact, supporting players long after their careers have ended.
  • A game-changing partnership with One Team Partners has unlocked new commercial opportunities, reinforcing the collective value of RLPA members.

The RLPA remains committed to being the strongest players’ association in the region, ensuring members’ voices are heard, respected, and protected.
