The Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) make the following statement regarding both the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations and findings of Strike Force Nuralda.
RLPA CEO Ian Prendergast clarified reports regarding the status of the ongoing CBA discussions with the National Rugby League.
“We have received the NRL’s latest offer last night which we will take the appropriate time to consider,” Prendergast said. “It has always been our aim to reach an agreement prior to the expiry of the current deal on October 31.
“However, it is extremely important that the right agreement is reached.
“While there has been a lot of public commentary around the passing of the October 31 date, our view is that it will not change the negotiating landscape if both parties are committed to entering into a genuine partnership.
“Both the RLPA and NRL have undertaken an enormous task over the past 18 months to get to this point and the reality is that the parties are very close to finalising a great deal for the entire game of Rugby League.
“We have reached agreement on a significant number of matters and are hopefully very close to resolving the issues that remain outstanding.
“The RLPA and the Players remain committed to the negotiation process and securing an agreement that will help take the game forward through a genuine partnership with the NRL and Clubs.”
Regarding the conclusion of the comprehensive match-fixing inquiry by Strike Force Nuralda, Prendergast stated:
“The RLPA is pleased that Strike Force Nuralda has confirmed that there is no evidence of, or charges relating to, match-fixing in the NRL,” he said. “The integrity of the sport is paramount, and the outcome of this lengthy police inquiry provides reassurance to everyone involved in the game that it is free of such corrupt practices.
“The disappointing aspect of this has been the unsubstantiated speculation and reporting regarding the serious allegations being investigated by the NSW Police Force, which not only harmed the entire game, but the individuals involved – including the players.
“Strike Force Nuralda has also made recommendations in relation to protecting the ongoing integrity of the sport, which we look forward to working through with the NRL, Clubs and Players.
“It is a reminder that we must remain ever vigilant in protecting the game against negative influences.
“The Players are aware of that and are committed to working in partnership with the NRL to protect the sport.”
