Rankin: I could have been left stranded

In our series ‘Retired Rookies’, we catch up with some of the retiring Class of 2023 to look into what they have been doing in the first year post career.

Jordan Rankin shared his experience retiring from the game, his relationship with the RLPA’s Past Player & Transition Program, and some of his goals for the future.

What did you do in the first year of your retirement from elite rugby league?

“I was lucky enough that when I decided to retire I transitioned straight into a full–time position at the Parramatta Eels as their Jersey Flegg Head coach. I was also spending time on the pathways, as well as on the NRL staff to gain experience and keep learning as part of my progression through the coaching ranks which I’m still doing today.”

What did you find most difficult about retiring?

“Routine! I always loved the training aspect of the game and being able to keep fit and healthy day in day out – which was all planned for you throughout your day. I now realise I have to schedule it in myself, otherwise I won’t get it done. It’s something I really need for my mental and physical health, and it’s important I set time aside to prioritise it.”

What do you wish you knew about retirement that you didn’t know when you were playing?

“If it wasn’t for Parramatta and the RLPA, I could have been left stranded once I finished. Obviously gaining qualifications and experience in different fields while you play is up to you.
“But realistically after your last game the help really only comes from those who care about you through the RLPA and people close to you.”

How is the RLPA’s Past Player & Transition Program helping you in your transition and retirement?

“Through all that the RLPA does including looking after former and current players, they have been huge! I was able to complete my Cert 4 in Building and Construction, Cert3/4 in Fitness, and a few other things I was interested in…. That’s the best part and something I knew once I finished I have something to fall back on which made retirement a lot less daunting.”

What are your career and life goals for the next few years?

“I have two beautiful, healthy kids and a beautiful partner who I’m so grateful for. To spend as much time with them while I still get to live out my dreams. The opportunity to learn, grow and become an NRL head coach further down the track is something I’m interested in. Potentially get involved in some businesses and some public speaking are all things I enjoy doing.”

Who is a player that is doing well in retirement that really inspires or motivates you and what are they up to?

“I’m so grateful to have some really great men who retired before or around the same time as me who are doing great things within the community. I am lucky enough to call them two of my best mates.

Matt Srama retired through injury and has worked within the game at the Titans but is now the leading buyer’s agent on the Gold Coast.

Ryan James, an entrepreneur at heart and has done amazing work through the indigenous community and with small businesses. So proud of both of them and seeing us all play first grade together, to where they are now is amazing.”
