James Tamou: Finding new purpose
In our series ‘Retired Rookies’, we catch up with some of the retiring Class of 2023 to look into what they have been doing in the first year post career. James Tamou spoke to the importance of identity, and how the RLPA’s Past Player & Transition Program has helped him in his transition into retirement.
What did James Tamou do in the first year of his retirement from elite rugby league?
“I was lucky enough to play another year of rugby league in the Queensland Cup with the Townsville Blackhawks.
“I count myself fortunate because I was able to dive into work as well as keep playing footy. I didn’t feel as though I was falling off a cliff as I could slowly release my identity as a footy player, while still having a purpose within the rugby league environment.”
What did James Tamou find most difficult about retiring?
“You get told about the identity thing and switching hats from “James Tamou”, the rugby league player, to not being that person anymore. So, I guess, it’s important to understand your new purpose and get ready for life after playing full-time, and sort out a routine that can help facilitate those changes.”
What does James Tamou wish he knew about retirement that he didn’t know when he was playing?
“I wish I knew just how much better the retirement experience can be if you take advantage of the opportunities that are available whilst in the NRL such as networking, Education Grants and career planning.”
How is the RLPA’s Past Player & Transition Program helping James Tamou in his transition and retirement?
“I think one thing the RLPA Past Player & Transition Program has helped me immensely with was connecting me with, and talking to other past players.
“Hearing about their experiences, taking away points from what did and didn’t work for them, and putting them into my own transition has been really helpful.”

What are James Tamou’s career and life goals for the next few years?
“I’m currently studying wellbeing. I want to learn as much as I possibly can in this space. Playing professionally, you notice the different cultures teams build and the relationships you make within those environments, and how they directly influence how successful you are.
“Taking that care factor and attitude into other elements of life can be really beneficial and give you a newfound purpose.”
