The Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) acknowledges the extremely difficult decision of the Rugby League World Cup and the UK Government this evening to postpone the 2021 RLWC Tournament.
The RLPA would like to acknowledge the tremendous effort of the RLWC board, Jon Dutton, and the entire team to maintain the tournament’s viability up to this point. We appreciate and respect the inclusive and professional approach taken with players and their representative body during an incredibly challenging past 18 months.
Notwithstanding the disappointment of the decision for the International game and fans, we look forward to maintaining a strong and collaborative relationship with the RLWC in preparing for the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments in 2022.
Chief Executive Officer Clint Newton said, “We have worked exceptionally close with the RLWC team to date and want to thank them for engaging in such a collaborative process which has allowed the players to feel respected and valued throughout the RLWC planning.
“While postponement is a setback for International Rugby League, we need to ensure that we continue to explore opportunities for players to participate and represent their Nations on the World stage leading into the 2022 tournament. It is clear, all stakeholders coming together and genuinely engaging in meaningful discussions remains fundamental and essential to achieving improved outcomes for rugby league on the world stage.
“The passion players have towards representing their Nations in international matches is undisputed, and the RLPA is committed to playing a lead role as we work towards increasing international exposure for Rugby League”.
The Rugby League World Cup was due to occur during October and November and has been postponed until 2022, with dates yet to be announced.
