Beanie for Brain Cancer Round 2019

FROM MARK HUGHES FOUNDATION MEDIA RELEASE

The Mark Hughes Foundation will invite the rugby league community to join them on the quest to fight Brain Cancer this week when Beanie for Brain Cancer Round launches during Round 19 of the NRL season.

This year’s Beanie for Brain Cancer Round urges fans to buy an MHF Beanie at all NRL matches or donate online with the aim of raising $3 million for research, with the next round of funding to open at the completion of the 2019 Beanie campaign in August.

It is only through innovation and teamwork that better treatments will be found for brain cancer patients.

Immunotherapy is thought to have the promise for a breakthrough and the research platforms that MHF supporters have helped build over the past 6 years have research teams excited at what the future holds.

The Beanie Round concept was the creation and continues in the legacy of former Nine Rugby League Executive Producer Matt Callander, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2016, with 2019 the third running of the round.

MHF Founder, Mark Hughes, said: “Myself and the MHF team are as motivated as ever to continue to make this the huge success that it has previously been thanks to the NRL, media and fans who rally behind us each year.”

“The funds raised from Beanie for Brain Cancer Round is having a direct impact on brain cancer patients and giving hope for the future”.

“Our thoughts are always with Matt Callander and we take great pride in working hand in hand with Anne and the Callander family to ensure we are doing Matt’s legacy proud.”

NRL CEO, Todd Greenberg, said: “Beanie for Brain Cancer Round is one of the most important weeks for the community on the rugby league calendar.”

“The collective support shown from the players, coaches and fans at the grounds each year is nothing short of incredible and goes a long way to finding a cure and tackling brain cancer once and for all.”

Brain Cancer statistics:

  • Survival rates have increased by 1% over the last 30 years
  • Kills more children than any other disease
  • Only 2/10 people diagnosed will live more than 5 years
  • Kills more people under 40 than any other cancer
  • Receives less than 5% of federal funding for cancer research
  • One person every 5 hours is diagnosed in Australia

The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) is a charity formed in Newcastle by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following Mark’s diagnosis with Brain Cancer in 2013.

The Mark Hughes Foundation’s mission is to raise much needed funds for research, to create awareness and support brain cancer patients and their families.
