The Rugby League Players’ Association (RLPA) has welcomed today’s announcement of an NRL Women’s Premiership and changes to the Elite Women’s program.
The new NRL Women’s Premiership will involve up to six teams aligned with NRL Clubs, with details regarding the terms and conditions – including a player payment model – yet to be negotiated.
The RLPA will play a key role in ensuring the players are both protected and properly remunerated through negotiations with the NRL and Clubs in coming months.
RLPA CEO Ian Prendergast said it’s an exciting time for the Women’s game and looks forward to continuing to advance the interests of the players involved in this space.
“Firstly, I would like to commend Todd (Greenberg) and his team on providing a new and exciting opportunity for female Rugby League players with the introduction of an NRL Women’s’ Competition,” Prendergast said.
“The RLPA has an important role to play in this area and we look forward to negotiating on behalf of the players the terms and conditions of their involvement in this new competition.
“We have already had a number of constructive conversations with the NRL regarding the vision for Women’s Rugby League, so we look forward to continuing that positive dialogue into the future.
“We all saw the impressive level of skill showcased in the Women’s Rugby League World Cup over the past few weeks, so this will be a great addition to the Rugby League calendar moving forward.”
